No reliable results are available for synthetic rutile regarding environmental fate and pathways. Therefore, stability and biodegradation are waived as well as read-across is proposed to bioaccumulation, transport and distribution and adsorption / desorption of TiO2 and Ti metal.

Synthetic rutile is not considered as bioaccumulative as Ti concentrations in fish tissues stayed constant over the concentration range of TiO2 in water tested, resulting in decreasing BCF with increasing TiO2 concentrations in water and BSAF factors for plants vary between 0.0002 to 0.0008 kg/kg and point to the absence of bioaccumulation of Ti in plants. The results on available monitoring data reflect equilibrium conditions for Ti in the environment, regardless the speciation of Ti.
