Lithium salts of fatty acids predominantly C24-C28 (saturated) is not highly flammable.

The data on flammability has been read across from lithium behenate (C22). In a GLP-compliant study following EC 440/2008 method A10 (Harlan 2013), lithium behenate was determined not highly flammable.

Data are available on lithium myristate, lithium 12 -hydroxystearate and lithium behenate (Harlan 2013) which show that lithium salts of monocarboxylic acids C14-C22 category are not highly flammable. Increases in chain length from C22 to C28 are not expected to change in properties from carbon chain lengths of C14 to C22 and therefore lithium salts of fatty acids predominantly C24 to C28 is considered not highly flammable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Lithium salts of fatty acids predominantly C24 to C28 (saturated) is considered not highly flammable. Experience in manufacture and handling shows that the substance does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperatures and is stable at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days). Experience has also shown that the substance does not react with water. Therefore, the substance does not meet the criteria for classification as flammable solid, pyrophoric substance or substance which in contact with water emit flammable gases.
