Additional information

This substance is a synthetic inorganic clay, sold as a fine white powder. It has a layer structure consistent with naturally occurring clay minerals but when dispersed in water forms disc-shaped platelets. The primary particle size is very small and therefore when dispersed into water results in clear and colourless dispersions, invisible to the naked eye. An individual disc of this substance in aqueous dispersion has dimensions of around 1nm thick and 4 - 10000nm wide but the charge on the edge and face of the platelet encourage the discs to form a "house of cards" type structure using face/edge attraction resulting in the formation of a gel structure at sufficient concentration (usually around 2% or more in tap water). The material as sold is not in nano form but at a PSD in the micron range
