Key result
Surface tension:
62.4 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
1 g/L

A aqueous solution of the test substance with a concentration of 1.0g/L at ambient temperature was prepared. Six measurements at a temperature of 20°C, every 5 min, were done.

Table 1.

 Measurements
 Time / min  0  5 10  15  20  25
 W / mN/m 62.7  62.8  62.8  62.8  62.7  62.8

After the correction with respect to the table given in the directive A.5 (Harkins-Jordan correction), the final value for the surface tension was: 62.4 mN/m at 20°C.

Conclusions:
Based on the results of the read across study, the surface tension of the substance was determined to be 62.4 mN/m at 20°C.
Executive summary:

A study was conducted to determine the surafce tension of the read across substance Reaktiv Scharlach F97 -0319 according to EU Method A.5, in compliance with GLP. The ring method was used in this experiment. The method is based on the measurement of the maximal vertical force, which is necessary to separate a ring being in contact with the liquid filled in a measuring cup, from the surface of this liquid. A calibration of the apparatus was carried out with distilled water. The surface tension was determined to be: We = 72.30 mN/m. The calibration factor F was calculated with to the literature value for water: F = Wlit/We = 1.0039. A aqueous solution of the test substance with a concentration of 1.0g/L at ambient temperature was then prepared. Six measurements at a temperature of 20°C, every 5 min, were done. After the correction with respect to the table given in the directive A.5 (Harkins-Jordan correction) and based on the read across study, the final value for the surface tension of the test substance was determined to be 62.4 mN/m at 20°C (Hoffmann, 1999).
