Description of key information

Appearance (Color, Physical State and Odor).

The appearance (colour, physical state and odour) was determined using procedures designed to be compatible with Methods 830.6302, 830.6303 and 830.6304 of the OPPTS Guidelines, August 1996 in accordance with GLP. The test item was assessed at 20.0 ± 0.5 ºC and 101 kPa to be a brown, hard, coarse, free-flowing, opaque homogenous solid, classified as 10R 2.5/2 using the Munsell® Color System and having no discernible odor.

 

Melting/Freezing Point.

The melting point was determined using differential scanning calorimetry according to the OECD 102 guideline in accordance with GLP. The test item was determined to decompose from approximately 176 °C (449 K). As the test item decomposed, no value for melting point could be determined

 

Boiling Point.

The boiling point was not determined as the test item decomposed prior to melting.

 

Density.

The relative density determined using a gas compression pycnometer, designed to be compatible with Method A.3 Relative Density of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008 and Method 109 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 02 October 2012 in accordance with GLP. the test item was determined to have a density of 1.45 x 103 kg/m3 at 19.4 ± 0.5 °C and a relative density of 1.45.

 

Surface Tension.

According to criteria stated in EC Method A.5, substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m under the conditions of this method should be regarded as being surface active.

The surface tension at nominally 1 g/L of test item in water has been determined to be 57.5 ± 0.5 mN/m at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C. The test item was considered to be surface-active.

Water Solubility.

The standard EC A.6/OECD 105 methodology was considered not applicable to this test item due to the expected high saturation level. A range of sample concentrations were prepared to visually assess the point at which saturation was reached. Above the saturation level, the test item formed a paste from which removal of the excess test item would not have been possible.

The water solubility of the test item has been determined to be in the range of 18.0 to 20.0% w/w at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C.

 

Partition Coefficient (n-octanol/water).

The Partition Coefficient (n-octanol/water) was determined using the shake flask method, designed to be compatible with Method A.8 Partition Coefficient of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008 and Method 107 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995, in accordance with GLP.

The partition coefficient of the test item has been determined to be 1.76 x 10-2 at 21.8 ± 0.5 °C, and a log10 Pow of -1.79.

 

Particle Size Distribution.

The particle size distribution was determined by a seive method using a procedure designed to be compatible with the European Commission Technical Guidance Document EUR 20268 Determination of Particle Size Distribution, Fibre Length and Diameter Distribution of Chemical Substances (2002), in accordance with GLP.

There were too few particles of a size less than 10.0 μm to allow for an accurate assessment of the mass median aerodynamic diameter.

The inhalable fraction is defined as the mass fraction of particles which can be inhaled by nose or mouth, the thoracic fraction is defined as the mass fraction of particles that passes the larynx and the respirable fraction is defined as the mass fraction of particles that reaches the alveoli.

As percentage of test item having an inhalable particle size of less than 100 μm was determined to be 1.29%. The test item has been considered to be essentially non-inhalable.

Vapor pressure

The vapor pressure was determined using the vapor pressure balance method, designed to be compatible with Method A.4 Vapour Pressure of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 (as amended) of 30 May 2008, and Method 104 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 23 March 2006, in accordance with GLP.

The vapor p ressure of the test item has been determined to be less than 5.1 x 10-3 Pa at 25 ºC.

Flammability (Solids).

The flammability (solids) was determined using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method A.10 Flammability (Solids) of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008, in accordance with GLP.

Under the conditiones of the study, the test item failed to ignite, therfore it was determined that the test item was not highly flammable.

Flammability (Contact with Water).

The flammability (Contact with Water) was visually assessed and predicted negative based on experience with handling and use of the test item.

Pyrophoric Properties of Solids.

Pyrophoric Properties (of Solids) of the test item were visually assessed and predicted negative based on experience with handling and use of the test item.

Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids

The auto flammability of the test item was determined using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method A.16 Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008, in accordance with GLP.

Whilst heating the test item, no relevant exothermic reaction /self-heating of the sample was observed. On completion of the test, the test item was an expanded black, charred mass.

The test item has been determined to not have a relative self-ignition temperature below 400 °C.

Flash point

This study was not conducted because decomposition occured during the melting point study

Explosive Properties.

The explosive properties of the test item were assessed using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method A.14 Explosive Properties of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008, in accordance with GLP. The tests carried out to assess for explosive properties of the test item were: BAM Friction Test, BAM Fall Hammer Test, Koenen Steel Tube Test. Under the test conditions for each of the respective tests no signs of ignition, explosion or decomposition were observed. As the results for each of the tests: BAM Friction Test, BAM Fall Hammer Test, Koenen Steel Tube Test were negative, the test item was determined not to have explosive properties.

Oxidising Properties (Solids).

The oxidising properties of the test item were determined based on on the chemical structure of the test item, using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method A.17 Oxidising Properties (Solids) of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008. The results of the oxidizing properties for the test item have been predicted to be negative.
