First-aid measures

Inhalation: In case of exposure to fumes, fine particulates, or powders move to fresh air, lay patient down, get medical attention if discomfort persists.

Ingestion:  Rinse mouth thoroughly. Give 200-300 ml water to drink.  Do not induce vomiting. Get medical attention if any discomfort continues.

Skin contact:

- Copper scales are not skin sensitizers. Use general hygiene measure for contact with the material: wash with soap and warm water.

- In case of contact with molten product, cool rapidly with water and seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to remove molten product from skin because skin will tear easily. Cuts or abrasions should be treated promptly with thorough cleansing of the affected area.

Eye contact: copper scale may cause eye irritation. Use general measures if eye irritations occur. Do not rub eyes. Remove any contact lenses. Flush eyes thoroughly with water, taking care to rinse under eyelids. If irritation persists, continue flushing for 15 minutes, rinsing from time to time under eyelids. If discomfort continues, consult a physician.

General advice: Get medical attention if any discomfort develops. Seek medical attention for all burns, regardless how minor they may seem. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Notes to physician: Treat symptomatically. The effects might be delayed.

Fire-fighting measures

Copper scales are non-flammable

Unusual fire & explosion hazards:  Solid metal is not flammable; however, very finely divided metallic dust or powder may form an explosive mixture with air. Do not use water on molten metal: Explosion hazard could result.

Specific hazards Fire or high temperatures create: Metal oxides.

Extinguishing media : sand, graphite, dolomite, sodium chlorite

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons:  Do not use water or halogenated extinguishing media.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters: Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire.

Accidental release measures

Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid inhalation

Environmental precautions : Avoid release to the environment.

Methods for cleaning up:

-Ventilate the area thoroughly.

-Restrict the area to those persons wearing respiratory protection. Do not allow unprotected people into the area until cleanup has been completed.

-Allow spilled material to solidify and scrape up with shovels into a suitable container for recycle or disposal as hazardous waste.  

-Liquids containing powder should be absorbed in vermiculite, dry sand, or earth before putting into a suitable container for recycle or disposal as hazardous waste.  

-Collect material using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. Place in a suitable container for recycling or disposal as hazardous waste

-DO NOT empty into drains or waterways .

Handling and storage

The substance is an intermediate to be used under Strictly Controlled conditions.  Control and procedural technologies are used to minimize emissions and release resulting exposure.

The material is stored and transported in massive form, thereby seriously reducing the risks for exposure.  

The  main potential risks occur during the melting of the material.  The manufacturer has documented at the manufacturing site how strictly controlled conditions are guaranteed.  These include:

- Provide adequate ventilation.  

-Avoid generation and spreading of dust  (use of hoods above smelters and appropriate dust filters).  

-Avoid inhalation of dust and small particles and contact with skin and eyes.

-Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves and/or RPE) in areas where dusts are present (smelting area and during critical maintenance operations).

-Observe good industrial hygiene practices.  

-Perform appropriate monitoring campaigns to demonstrate absence of risks towards exposures of  Cu, Ni, Pb, As...

Storage Massive material: Store away from incompatible materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, avoiding contact with heat and acids.  

General  measures : Avoid contact with molten material. Do not use water on molten metal.
