Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Data was assessed from the exposure of sewage slughe microorganisms to various linear and branched alkaryl bvenzene sulphonates. Exposure was to assess the possible inhibition of aerobic microbial metabolism, as indicated by the consumption of oxygen, and if possible establish an EC50 for respiratory inhibition due to the exposure over a period of 3-hours at dose levels upto and including 10000 mg/l. The substances indicated no inhibition of aerobic microbial metabolism, achieving an EC 50 > 10000 mg/l and a NOEC at the maximum dose concentration of 10000 mg/l.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
10 000 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
10 000 mg/L

Additional information

The linear and branched alkaryl benzene sulphonates are not readily biodegradable substances. These data, however, demonstrate that the substances are not toxic to the sewage sludge microorganisms and the lack of biodegradability is not an effect of toxicity to the test system.
