First-aid measures

AFTER INHALATION: Move the victim away from the area of hazard. Keep the victim half-seated or seated and restful. Seek immediate medical advice.

AFTER SWALLOWING: Give plenty of lukewarm water to drink. Induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical advice.

AFTER EYE CONTACT: Rinse immediately with plenty of cool, preferably running, water for approx. 15 minutes. Avoid strong water stream due to danger of conjunctival damage. Seek immediate medical advice.

AFTER SKIN CONTACT: Remove clothes, rinse the skin with plenty of cool, preferably running, water. Seek medical advice if skin irritation occurs.

Fire-fighting measures

SUITABLE EXTINGUISING MEDIA: non-combustible. In case of fire in immediate vicinity, fight fire with extinguishing media appropriate for the materials on fire.

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA WHICH MAY NOT BE USED: unknown

SPECIAL EXPOSURE HAZARDS: may generate toxic fumes in high temperatures. In contact with base metals may produce hydrogen.

SPECIAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR FIRE FIGHTING: depending on the materials on fire. In case of direct exposure of the intermediate to fire use full protective clothing and breathing apparatus.

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS: alarm others about the fire. Keep all persons not involved in fire fighting away from the area of hazard. Notify the Senior Shift Foreman.

Accidental release measures

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS: mark the emergency site with warning signs, warn bystanders to stay upwind. Notify the Plant Manager.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS: emergency personnel should wear acid-resistant protective clothing and protective eyewear. Avoid direct contact with the intermediate.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS: prevent the material from entering sewers, surface or soil waters. Prevent surface distribution through e.g. building embarkments.

METHODS FOR CLEANING UP: collect as much material as possible in tightly closed and acid-resistant containers. Transfer collected material and soil to anode slime treatment plant.

Handling and storage

HANDLING: avoid dust formation at the workplace. In the case of dust formation, ensure proper local exhaust ventilation with enclosure and general ventilation. In the case of inadequate ventilation, wear appropriate individual respiratory protection equipment. Containers containing the material should be tightly closed and appropriately marked. Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling the material.

STORAGE: store in acid-resistant, properly marked, tightly closed containers. Prevent dust formation. Keep away from alkalis. When handling lead-containing materials, observe the provisions of the Regulation of the Minister of the Economy concerning work health and safety for zinc and lead production and processing dated 30 December 1999 (Dz. U. (Polish Journal of Laws) 2000.3.38).

Exposure controls / personal protection

EXPOSURE LIMITS:

Name of pollutant                                                                                          TLV                                        TLV-STEL                                  TLV-CL

Lead and non-organic lead compounds - per Pb content                     0.05 mg/m³                         not determined                        not determined

Arsenic and non-organic arsenic compounds - per As content          0.01 mg/m³                         not determined                        not determined

Copper and non-organic copper compound - per Cu content            0.2 mg/m3                           not determined                        not determined

Underage persons may not work exposed to heavy metals or their compounds.

Pregnant and breast-feeding women may not work exposed to carcinogenic agents, lead or lead compounds.

REQUIREMENTS FOR VENTILATION AND EQUIPMENT:

Local exhaust ventilation with enclosure and general ventilation are required in case of emission of dust/aerosol to air. suction nozzles of local ventilation should be located at or below work level. Air outtakes of general ventilation should be located at the top of the room and air intakes should be located at the bottem of the room. When handling lead-containing materials, observe the provisions of the Regulation of Minister of the Economy concerning work health and safety for zinc and lead production and production and processing dated 30 December 1999 (Dz.U. 2000.3.38).

REQUIREMENTS FOR PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT:

Avoid direct contact with the material. If the concentration level is determined and known, select appropriate personal protection measures taking into account the concentration at the given workplace, exposure length and works performed by the given employee as well as the instructions provided by the producer of the personal protection equipment.

SKIN PROTECTION:

Wear protective clothing made from acid-resistant material; wear protective acid-resistant footwear.

EYE PROTECTION:

If exposure is possible, use goggles or protective eyewear.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION:

Depending on material concentration levels at the workplace, use: a half-mask with filter of a class appropriate for the material concentration level in air, or a mask with filter of a class appropriate for the material concentration level in air. In case of lack of oxygen, use self-contained or stationary respiratory equipment.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Remove contaminated clothes immediately and store in closed containers, decontaminate before further use.
