Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 2013-03-15 to 2013-03-19
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP. No deviation was reported. Substance ID is adequately specified with purity and isomers composition. Therefore full validation applies.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: ISO 304-1985 (E)
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Remarks:
UK GLP Compliance Programme (inspected on 10 July 2012 / signed on 30 Nov. 2012)
Type of method:
OECD harmonised ring method
Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Storage condition of test material: room temperature, in the dark.
Key result
Surface tension:
62.9 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Remarks on result:
other: 90% saturation

Water (calibration)

Temperature = 20.0 - 20.4°C

Sample A: calibration factor = 1.003 (mean of 6 readings)

Sample B: calibration factor = 1.003 (mean of 6 readings)

Test item

Temperature = 20.0 - 20.4ºC Sample A: 62.5 mN/m (mean of 5 readings) = 62.7 mN/m corrected pH = 5.6 Sample B: 62.9 mN/m (mean of 5 readings) = 63.1 mN/m corrected pH = 5.6 As each (corrected) surface tension value was within 0.5 mN/m of the mean (corrected) value, the mean (corrected) value was considered to be acceptable as the endpoint of the test

Conclusions:
According to EU A5 criteria, as the result is above the threshold value of 60 mN/m, the substance is NOT considered to have surface-active potential under the experimental conditions.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of the test substance was measured under GLP according to OECD 115/EU A5 guidelines, ring method, at 90% of the saturation solubility (from a 1 g/L dispersion).

Two replicates were performed at 20°C, and the mean of the consistent values was corrected with calibration factor from water.

The surface tension was measured as 62.9 mN/m, at 90% saturation and 20°C.

Description of key information

Surface tension = 62.9 mN/m, at 90% saturation expected, and 20°C

NOT considered as surface-active under the experimental conditions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
62.9

Additional information

A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized OECD/EC method and under GLP, is available. Therefore, it is considered as a key study, and the result is retained as key value for purpose of CSA.
