Description of key information

Within 28 days, a degradation rate of 0 % was determined. 3-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-2-quinolyl)-1H-inden-1-one is considered to be "Not Readily Biodegradable". The reference compound sodium benzoate showed 88 % degradation after 14 days.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

To test for its biodegradability potential of 3-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-2-quinolyl)-1H-inden-1-one according to EU method C.4 -D “Manometric Respirometry Test“(2008) and the OECD guiedeline 301 F (adopted July 1992), the substance was incubated for 28 days in continuously stirrd 250 mL closed flask (in duplicate) in the dark with an inoculum originally collected from local, predominantly municipal wastewter treatment plant. In this assay, biodegradation was estimated by biological oxygen demand (BOD) over time. BOD was measured daily by a manometer. The incubation temperature was 22 ± 1 °C, pH was 7.4 - 8.0. The concentration of inoculum was 30 mg/L and the one of 3-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-2-quinolyl)-1H-inden-1-one was a suspension of 100 mg/L. Degradation eas calculated by substracting the amount BOD in the negative (inoculum only) control from that in the substance or positive control at any given time point and divided by the chemical oxygen demand (COD) or thereotical oxygen demand (ThOD). The 28 -days degradation was 0 % and for the positive control (with reference substance) the biodegradation was 88 %. Therefore, 3-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-2-quinolyl)-1H-inden-1-one is considered to be “Not Readily Biodegradable“.
