Description of key information

An acute oral toxicity study was being conducted producing a LD50 > 2000 mg/kg bw . The other acute toxicity studies were being waived as target chemical is known to be corrosive.

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII and Annex VIII, generally no studies on acute toxicity shall be conducted if the test item is known to be corrosive. Target chemical titanium oxide is corrosive as it releases sulphuric acid when in contact with wet material. An acute oral toxicity study still was being conducted, using propylene glycol as vehicle. The outcome was LD50 > 2000 mg/kg bw .

Justification for classification or non-classification

No classification of the substance according to CLP, regulation (EC) 1272/2008, as acute toxicity criteria are not met since the LD50 is above 2000 mg/kg body-weight.

Note that in countries outside the EU where GHS is being implemented, acute toxicity category 5 may be enforced, which applies to substances with LD50 between 2000 and 5000 mg/kg bw. With the data at hand this potentially applicable classification category could not be covered.
