Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In total, 73 reliable EC10 or NOEC values for chronic zinc toxicity to soil microorganisms were retrieved. All tests are performed with the native soil microbial community present in the soils. The data cover effects on 3 nitrogen transformation processes (ammonification, denitrification and nitrification), 6 carbon transformation processes (acetate mineralization, glutamic acid induced respiration, glucose induced respiration, mineralization of dissolved organic carbon, basal respiration and maize residue mineralization) and 4 enzyme activities (arylsulphatase, dehydrogenase, phosphatase and urease). The reliable NOEC and EC10 values range between 41 for glucose induced respiration (Smolders et al., 2003) and 8004 mg Zn/kg dw for arylsulphatase activity (Haanstra and Doelman, 1991). All NOEC and EC10 values are expressed based on total elemental Zn concentrations in soil. All reliable NOEC and EC10 values were taken forward to the derivation of the PNEC according to the statistical extrapolation approach.
