Administrative data

First-aid measures

Inhalation: Leave dusty area and get fresh air. Breathing assistance if necessary.

Skin: Wash with soap and water. See a medical practitioner if irritation persists.

Eyes: Flush with water 15 minutes to remove particles. See a medical practitioner if irritation persists.

Ingestion: No emergency care anticipated.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media: Briquettes ignite with difficulty, but then continue to burn slowly. Class D fire – Use dry chemical, completely dry sand, or carbon dioxide to smother the fire.

Extinguishing media not to be used: Water sprayed on burning material may generate hydrogen gas.

Special exposure hazards: Avoid procedures that may create dust. Dust will readily oxidize at high temperature to higher oxidation states and ultimately to the 5-state, which is considered the most toxic of the V-oxides.

Special protective equipment for fire fighters: Full protective equipment including positive pressure breathing apparatus.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: Skin, eye, and respiratory protection as needed by conditions.

Environmental precautions: Prevent entering sewage systems or surface water.

Cleaning methods: vacuum Preferred – or sweeping.

Additional information: Avoid decontamination procedures which create airborne dusting. Use ventilation if necessary to control dusting. Keep ignition sources away from spill area.

Handling and storage

Handling: Vacuum dust at point of formation. Provide proper protective gear for handling dusty materials. Personnel should clean up after handling.Avoid areas where dust is present. Avoid heating above 150°C.

Milling: Consideration should be given to using an inert atmosphere (nitrogen) to avoid re-oxidation.

Storage: Keep dry and in closed containers. Avoid heating above 150°C. Keep away from foodstuffs.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Recommendations on equipment designs: Proper dust collection. Minimize dust during dumping operations.

Occupational exposure limit: No specific DNEL for vanadium carbide.

Personal safety equipment

Respiratory protection: Use respirators approved by NIOSH/MSHA in dusty areas.

Hand protection: Use protective gloves and barrier creams.

Eye protection: Use goggles or safety glasses with side shields.

Skin protection: Not normally required.

Personal hygiene: Wash with soap and water after handling and before eating, drinking, or smoking.

Stability and reactivity

Conditions to avoid: Situations which cause dusting or heating above 150°C.

Incompatible materials: None.

Hazardous decomposition: Unstable in air at temperatures above 150°C, with conversion to vanadium oxides.

Disposal considerations

Empty-container recommendation: Product does not possess characteristics, which may qualify as hazardous waste. Waste and containers may be disposed of in accordance with applicable local guidelines. Unused product may be returned to supplier for recycling.
