Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Melting point of bismuth(III)trinitrate, pentahydrate: 73°C at 1020 hPa (study results, OECD guideline 102)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
73 °C

Additional information

The determination of the melting point was carried out by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with bismuth (III) trinitrate pentahydrate.

The test item was heated up from ambient to the final temperature (450 and 600 °C, respectively).

Two measurements in aluminium crucibles with a hole at an atmospheric pressure of 1019 and 1020 hPa respectively showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range 45 to 90 °C with an onset temperature of 73 °C. An additional measurement with the capillary method was performed in order to clarify the results of the DSC measurements.

However, the reference substance (Bi(NO3)3) is the anhydrous form (only stable in acid) , the theoretical melting point might be higher in this case, since chemically combined water interferes with the structure of the metal salt.
