Description of key information

 The hydrocarbon components of petrolatums have negligible vapour  pressures at ambient temperatures and hence, volatility is not a  significant fate process for these petroleum substances (CONCAWE, 2001).

Additional information

All the materials in the category are solid or semi-solid at room temperature. Any vapour pressure attributable to these materials would be from the oil component of the material (if it is present). A lower and upper value of 0 to 20 Pa @ 80°C was reported for hydrocarbon waxes as a group (European Wax Federation, 1990). However, no further information was provided as to whether the upper limit was obtained for a paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, petrolatum, or slack wax. The petroleum oxidate is reported to have vapour pressure less than 1Pa at 25°C.
