Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aluminium fluoride was reported to have low toxicity to microorganisms derived from activated sludge, with a 3-hour EC50 value for growth inhibition of greater than 50% (v/v) WAF in an OECD guideline study (Test No. 209).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The potential toxicity of AlF3to microorganisms was assessed using activated sludge (predominantly domestic sewage) in accordance with OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals No. 209 (Carlsson, 2002). The study pre-dated the GLP requirements for ecotoxicity. The study was performed using a freshwater, static system at 21 ± 1ºC. To prepare water accommodated fraction (WAF), 1000 mg of AlF3was added to 1 L deionized water and mixed for 24 hours. The supernatant WAF was then diluted into five concentrations: 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50% v/v. The test vessels, with a final volume of 250 mL, contained test article in deionized water at five different concentrations, activated sludge, and synthetic medium. Following 180 minutes of contact time, oxygen consumption was inhibited by approximately 6% at the 50% v/v concentration. Thus, the 3-hour EC50 for growth inhibition was determined to be greater than 50% v/v AlF3 WAF.
