Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aluminium fluoride was reported to have low acute toxicity to Daphnia magna with a 48-hour NOEC value of 100% (v/v) (undiluted water phase of a loading of 1000 mg/L of AlF3), equivalent to 7.6 mg fluoride/L, in an OECD guideline study (Test No. 202). Additionally, the 48-hour EC50 was determined to be greater than 7.6 mg fluoride/L.

Additional information

The potential acute toxicity of AlF3 to aquatic invertebrates was assessed in Daphnia magna in accordance with OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals No. 202 and in compliance with GLP (Olsson, 2001). The study was performed using a freshwater, static test system. To prepare the stock test solution, 250 mg of AlF3 was added to 250 mL of dilution water and stirred for 24 hours. Since the substance was only slightly soluble, the water phase from the mixture was set to 100% v/v. Daphnids (10/group) were exposed to the undiluted (i.e., 100% v/v) water phase of this loading (1000 mg/L AlF3) for a period of 48 hours, with two replicates performed. Analytical concentrations were 3 mg aluminium/L and 7.6 mg fluoride/L. Other test conditions were as per the OECD guideline. No signs of acute toxicity were observed following exposure to water saturated with AlF3. The 48-hour NOEC was determined to be 100% v/v (loaded water phase), which was equivalent to 7.6 mg fluoride/L, and the EC50 greater than 7.6 mg fluoride/L. The validity criteria for this test were fulfilled.
