Additional information

Two studies were performed to assess the flammability of sodium hypophosphite of which Tremain (2005) was chosen as key study since it was a GLP guideline study (Klimisch 1). This study was compliant with GLP and performed according to EU method A10. In the preliminary screening test sodium hypophosphite (solid) failed to ignite during the 2 minutes the Bunsen flame was applied. Thus the screening test showed that the test substance is not flammable according to Reg. 1272/2008/CE and GHS UN (2007).

The other study (Reuse, 2009), which is guideline study with acceptable restrictions (Klimisch 2), tested the flammability of the solid monohydrated sodium hypophosphite according to method A10 requirements from regulation (CE) n°440/2008 under ISO 17025. Also in this study the screening test showed no ignition during the 4 minutes the Bunsen flame was applied. Hence the screening test also showed that the test substance is not flammable according to Reg. 1272/2008/CE and GHS UN (2007).

Justification for classification or non-classification

The studies showed that sodium hypophosphite is non flammable according to CLP regulation (EC) 1272/2008, directive 67/548/EEC and GHS UN (2007) as the substance failed to ignite during the 2 and 4 minutes the Bunsen flame was applied.
