Additional information

Two chronic freshwater fish studies using fathead minnows were examined for this endpoint. Both studies were assigned Klimish scores of 2 based on good scientific practices followed in these non-GLP, published studies. In one study, six concentrations of sodium chloride (and controls) were delivered to early life stage fathead minnows in a continuous flow-through test system for 33 days. The 33-day NOEC and LOEC based on survival were 252 and 352 mg/L sodium chloride, respectively. The 33-day NOEC and LOEC for both length and weight were 533 and 734 mg/L sodium chloride, respectively. In the other chronic toxicity test with fathead minnows, larvae (either 1, 4, or 7 days old) were exposed to concentrations of sodium chloride ranging from 1,000 to 8,000 mg/L in a semi-static exposure regime for seven days. The 7-day NOEC and LOEC based on mortality were 4,000 and 8,000 mg/L, respectively. The lowest NOEC value reported for sodium chloride was the NOEC of 252 mg/L reported in the early life stage toxicity test with fathead minnows, thus this value was selected as the key parameter for this endpoint.
