Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Eyes: In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

Skin: Remove as much material from skin as possible by wiping with a dry cloth. Then wash with large amounts of water until all material is removed.

Ingestion: If the material is swallowed, get immediate medical attention or advice.

Inhalation: Move person to non-contaminated air, get immediate medical attention or advice.

Notes to physician: Provide general supportive measures and treat symptomatically.

Fire-fighting measures

General Fire Hazards: Flammable solid, water reactive. Can react vigorously with water, steam, or acids to release flammable/explosive hydrogen. Water reacts dangerously with this material and should NOT be used as an extinguishing agent for fires that involve it.

Hazardous Combustion Products: Reacts vigorously with water, moist air, steam, and acids liberating flammable/explosive hydrogen.

Extinguishing Media: USE limestone, dry soda ash, dry salt, dry sand, graphite powder, metal extinguishing powder such as Met-L-X(R) or Class D (sodium chloride type) extinguishers.

DO NOT USE water, foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical or chlorinated fire extinguishers.

Fire Fighting Equipment/Instructions: Wear full protective clothing, including helmet, self-contained positive pressure or pressure demand breathing apparatus, protective clothing and face mask.

Accidental release measures

Containment Procedures: Contain the discharged material. Remove sources of ignition. Remove sources of water.

Clean-up Procedures: Scoop dry solids into a DRY metal container, properly label, and cover. Take immediately to a waste handling area.

Evacuation Procedures: Isolate area. Keep unnecessary personnel away.

Special Procedures: If spilled calcium has come into contact with water, evacuate the area and proceed with caution. The reaction can rapidly proceed to self-ignition of hydrogen and splattering of molten calcium.

Handling and storage

Handling Procedures: Avoid getting material into contact with your skin and eyes. Do not breathe dust from this material. Minimize worker contact with the raw material by using protective clothing (gloves, protective clothing, shoes). To further reduce worker contact with the raw material, where applicable use mechanical equipment (forklifts, cranes, conveyor belts) or ladles/shovels to handle the substance.

Storage Procedures: Keep in a tightly closed container stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Store away from water or locations where water may be applied to extinguish a fire. Avoid high temperatures. A detached, fire-resistive building is recommended for quantity storage. Isolate from moist air, acids, and oxidizing materials. Containers of this material may be hazardous when empty as they contain product residues (dust, solids).

Exposure controls / personal protection

Control of dermal exposure:

-General good hygiene and housekeeping

-Use personal protective equipment

Eyes/Face: Wear safety glasses with side shields. Wear chemical safety goggles where dusting is possible.

Skin: Normal work clothing (long sleeved shirt,  long pants, and safety boots) is recommended. Wear leather or other appropriate work gloves, if necessary for type of operation.

Control of inhalation exposure:

-General good hygiene and housekeeping

-Use of local exhaust ventilation and respiratory protection is a recommended best practice. Depending on the application, use of both is not necessarily required for safe use.

-If material is ground, cut, stripped, or used in any operation which may generate small particles, use appropriate local exhaust ventilation OR respiratory protection. [PROC21]

-During hot work operations with metals (process temperature is greater than melting point->high fugacity) use appropriate local exhaust ventilation OR respiratory protection.[PROC25c]

-During potentially closed operations with minerals at elevated temperatures (process temperature is greater than melting point->High fugacity) use appropriate local exhaust ventilation AND respiratory protection.[PROC22c]

-During open processing and transfer of minerals at elevated temperatures (process temperature is greater than melting point->High fugacity) use appropriate local exhaust ventilation AND respiratory protection.[PROC23c, PROC27]

-During high (mechanical) energy work-up of substances use appropriate local exhaust ventilation AND respiratory protection.[PROC24c]

At sites where the handled material fugacity is not low, air sampling data may be collected to demonstrate levels below exposure limits DNEL of 1 mg/m3 (long-term) and 4 mg/m3 (short-term).

General: Eye wash fountain and emergency showers are recommended.

Control of environmental exposure:

-General good hygiene and housekeeping.

-Air filtration: fabric filter (eff 99.9%) is recommended.

-Do not allow process water in contact with calcium metal or oxidized calcium metal.

-Prevent discharge to waste- and/or surface water by closing sinks/basins.

-Waste water treatment at STP.

-Process operations and waste treatment in accordance with the Reference Document on Best Available Techniques for Waste Treatment Industries (European commission, 2001 a,b,c; 2006)

Stability and reactivity

Chemical Stability: Water reactive. Stable under ordinary conditions of use and storage.

Chemical Stability: Conditions to avoid: Avoid dispersion of dust in air. Keep away from heat, sparks, or open flame. Avoid contact with water. Avoid contact with acids. Avoid using water for dust or equipment cleaning.

Incompatibility: Moist air, water, acids, asbestos cement, halogens, lead dichloride phosphorus pentoxide, silicon, sodium, mixed oxides, sulfur, alcohols. Contact with alkali hydroxides or carbonates may cause detonation.

Hazardous Decomposition: Calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, and hydrogen.

Hazardous Polymerization: will not occur.

Disposal considerations

Any calcium metal that cannot be reused or recycled should be handled as a hazardous waste and sent to an approved treatment, storage and disposal facility. Dispose of waste according to local environmental regulations.
