Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Relevant and reliable chronic reference values (NOEC/EC10) that could be used for risk assessment purposes (PNEC) were identified for six different species. The values shown here represent ‘added’ concentration levels and may therefore deviate slightly from values reported elsewhere.

  • Micropterus salmoides: 36.8 mg B/L (end criterion: mortality)
  • Oncorhynchus mykiss: 19.2 mg B/L (effect criterion: mortality)
  • Brachydanio rerio: 6.3 mg B/L (effect criterion: growth)
  • Pimephales promelas: 21.3 mg B/L L (effect criterion: mortality)
  • Ictalurus punctatus: 13.5 mg B/L L (effect criterion: mortality)
  • Carassius auratus: 30.3 mg B/L L (effect criterion: mortality)

No reliable long-term studies with marine fish were identified in scientific literature.

Additional information

The identified reliable long-term data for fish species were used for the determination of a PNEC for the freshwater environment - using the statistical extrapolation method. All reported effect levels were generated with either boric acid or disodium tetraborate decahydrate as test substance, and test concentrations in the test media were verified. The reference values for the rainbow trout O.mykiss, the goldfish Carassius auratus, the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and the largemouth bass micropterus salmoides represent a geometric mean of several studies that assessed mortaility as effect criterion.

All other values represent the outcome of individual studies that were conducted with the respective species.

Additional information on the different long-term studies with fish can be found in the Tables and in the Background Document “Environmental effects assessment of boron”, which is attached in the technical dossier in IUCLID Section 13.
