Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

No reliable toxicity to freshwater fish data are available for tricalcium dicitrate, CAS 813-94-5. A fish short term toxicity study is, however, available for the parent acid of tricalcium dicitrate, citric acid (CAS 77-92-9). It is considered appropriate to read across the short term toxicity to fish results for tricalcium dicitrate, 813-94-5, because under conditions relevant to ecotoxicity assessment, the tricalcium salt and the citric acid are expected to be fully dissociated. Calcium is not expected contribute to the toxicity of the substance being a ubiquitous element.

The test reported (48 h) LC50 values corresponding to 440 mg/L and 760 mg/L determined in two laboratories conducting tests in parallel for the effects of citric acid, CAS 77-92-9 on mortality of the freshwater fish Leuciscus idus melanotus.

The study has been reported in the OECD SIDS as being conducted without neutralisation, however the current reviewer has found now evidence in the two sources reviewed concerning this study.

Calculations of the LC50 for tricalcium dicitrate:

The lowest (48 h) LC50 for citric acid is 440 mg/L, which is equivalent to 440 * 1.29 = 570 mg/L of tricalcium dicitrate 813-94-5

using (Mass of one mole of salt)/(mass of citric acid produced when salts dissociates) = 498.4 / (2 * 192.9) = 1.29.
