Endpoint:
partition coefficient
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 107 (Partition Coefficient (n-octanol / water), Shake Flask Method)
Deviations:
not specified
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
flask method
Partition coefficient type:
octanol-water
Specific details on test material used for the study:
100 g of the test substance, Lauryl Betaine (Lot 53983K16) was placed in an oven at 110°C for 5-6 hours to drive off the water. A 2 g sample of ‘dehydrated’ lauryl betaine was measured at 88.5% Solids using a pan drying method at 110°C for 1 hour.

Type:
log Pow
Partition coefficient:
0.07
Temp.:
25 °C
pH:
7.3
Details on results:
Lauryl Betaine, lot 53983K16
Sample pH Analysis (1 gram, 1 hour @ 110°C)
First 7.3 39.24
Second 7.3 38.73
Third 7.3 40.63
Average 39.53 (1.0)
Calculation
The partition coefficient is defined as:
Pow = conc in n-octonol / conc in H2O
Lauryl Betaine, Pow = ( 39.5/ 46.4 ) = 0.851
Log Pow = -0.070

Description of key information

Lauryl Betaine is a surfactant containing both water soluble and oil soluble portions within its structure. It is known to be water soluble and partially soluble in n-octanol. This test has confirmed that this substance is n-octonol soluble at a level of 39.5% ± 1.0%.

The partition coefficient has been shown to be

Pow = 0.85

Log Pow = -0.070

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
0.07
at the temperature of:
25 °C
