First-aid measures

Description of first aid measures:

General:

GENERAL. Check the vital functions. Unconscious: maintain adequate airway and respiration. Respiratory arrest: artificial respiration or oxygen. Cardiac arrest: perform resuscitation. Victim conscious with laboured breathing: half-seated. Victim in shock: on his back with legs slightly raised. Vomiting: prevent asphyxia/aspiration pneumonia. Prevent cooling by covering the victim (no warming up). Keep watching the victim. Give psychological aid. Keep the victim calm, avoid physical strain. Depending on the victim's condition: doctor/hospital.

After inhalation: Remove the victim into fresh air. Immediately consult a doctor/medical service.

After skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Wash immediately with lots of water (15 minutes)/shower. Consult a doctor/medical service.

After eye contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Do not apply neutralizing agents. Take victim to an ophthalmologist.

After ingestion: Give nothing to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Immediately consult a doctor/medical service.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed:

Acute symptoms

After inhalation: No effects known.

After skin contact: No effects known.

After eye contact: Irritation of the eye tissue. Inflammation/damage of the eye tissue.

After ingestion: No effects known.

Delayed symptoms: No effects known.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media:

Suitable extinguishing media: Water spray. Polyvalent foam. ABC powder. Carbon dioxide. Sand/earth.

Unsuitable extinguishing media: No unsuitable extinguishing media known.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture:

On burning: release of toxic and corrosive gases/vapours (nitrous vapours, hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide - carbon dioxide). On heating: release of

highly flammable gases/vapours (ethanol).

Advice for firefighters:

Instructions: Cool tanks/drums with water spray/remove them into safety. Do not move the load if exposed to heat. Dilute toxic gases with water spray.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters: Gloves. Protective goggles. Dust cloud production: compressed air/oxygen apparatus. Heat/fire exposure: compressed air/oxygen apparatus.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:

Prevent dust cloud formation, e.g. by wetting. No naked flames.

Protective equipment for non-emergency personnel

See heading Personal protection

Protective equipment for emergency responders

Gloves. Protective goggles. Dust cloud production: compressed air/oxygen apparatus.

Suitable protective clothing: See heading Personal protection

Environmental precautions:

Contain released substance, pump into suitable containers. Plug the leak, cut off the supply. Knock down/dilute dust cloud with water spray.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:

Prevent dust cloud formation. Scoop solid spill into closing containers. Carefully collect the spill/leftovers. Clean contaminated surfaces with an excess of water. Wash clothing and equipment after handling.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling:

Avoid raising dust. Keep away from naked flames/heat. Observe normal hygiene standards. Keep container tightly closed. Remove contaminated clothing

immediately.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:

Safe storage requirements: Store in a dry area. Ventilation at floor level. Store at room temperature. Meet the legal requirements.

Keep away from: Heat sources, (strong) bases, oxidizing agents, metals, water/moisture.

Suitable packaging material: Plastics, cardboard with plastic inner liner, HDPE.

Non suitable packaging material: Aluminium, iron, copper, zinc.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure controls:

The information in this section is a general description.

Appropriate engineering controls

Avoid raising dust. Keep away from naked flames/heat. Carry operations in the open/under local exhaust/ventilation or with respiratory protection.

Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment

Observe normal hygiene standards. Keep container tightly closed. Do not eat, drink or smoke during work.

a) Respiratory protection: Dust production: dust mask with filter type P1.

b) Hand protection: Gloves.

c) Eye protection: Safety glasses. In case of dust production: protective goggles.

d) Skin protection: Protective clothing.

Environmental exposure controls:

See headings Accidental release measure and Disposal

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity: Substance has acid reaction.

Chemical stability: Hygroscopic.

Possibility of hazardous reactions: Reacts violently with (strong) bases.

Conditions to avoid: Avoid raising dust. Keep away from naked flames/heat.

Incompatible materials: (strong) bases, oxidizing agents, metals, water/moisture, aluminium, iron, copper, zinc.

Hazardous decomposition products: On heating: release of highly flammable gases/vapours (ethanol). On burning: release of toxic and corrosive gases/vapours (nitrous vapours, hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide - carbon dioxide).

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods:

Provisions relating to waste

Waste material code (Directive 2008/98/EC, decision 2001/118/EC).

16 03 06 (organic wastes other than those mentioned in 16 03 05). Depending on branch of industry and production process, also other EURAL codes may

be applicable. Can be considered as non hazardous waste according to Directive 2008/98/EC.

Disposal methods

Dissolve or mix with a combustible solvent. Remove to an incinerator for chlorinated waste materials with energy recovery. Remove waste in accordance

with local and/or national regulations. Treat using the best available techniques before discharge into drains or the aquatic environment.

Packaging/Container

Waste material code packaging (Directive 2008/98/EC).

15 01 02 (plastic packaging).
