Executive summary:

Trimethylamine hydrochloride, sol. 70 % (CAS 593 -81 -7) was tested in the golden orfe (Leuciscus idus) to evaluate its short-term toxicity potential to fish (BASF, 1987). The test procedure was conducted in accordance with national standard method (DIN 38412, Part 15) with acceptable restrictions (e.g. non-GLP, no analytical verification of test concentrations). The test substance (nominal 500 mg/L) was added to the test water without any pretreatment. Subsequently the fish (10 organisms per vessel) were placed into the aquaria. Mortality and symptoms were evaluated after 1, 4, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. PH, dissolved oxygen and temperature were measured after 1, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h.

No mortality was observed and no behavioural abnormalities/ symptoms were detected. The LC50 value was determined to be > 500 mg/L.
