Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Biodegradability of 1,1-dimethoxyethane was predicted with TOPKAT and BIOWIN. TOPKAT predicts biodegradability based on training data assessed by the MITI 1 test. Poor accuracy in the prediction (all false-postitives (degradable)) of the four most similar structures in the training set and also poor concordance between their experimental results (not biodegradable) and the prediction for the query structure suggest no confidence in the TOPKAT prediction. BIOWIN predicted 1,1-dimethoxyethane not to be readily biodegradable and there is confidence in the prediction. The ultimate and primary biodegradation time frame (models Biowin 3 and 4) was predicted to be weeks and days to weeks, respectively. 

Taking into account that similar structured acetal dimethoxymethane is not considered to be readily biodegradable (see, ECHA registration dossiers) there is an argument for a weight of evidence that 1,1-dimethoxyethane is not readily biodegradable.
