In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, testing does not appear scientifically necessary. The substance is considered not to have any sensitising properties, based on the physiological role of its constituent ions, as well as the fact that sensitising effects of sodium, carbonate and bicarbonate ions have never been reported, despite long-term historical and wide dispersive use (e.g. human food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and detergents).
