A Pre-test with MPM-HV2 instrument up to 360 °C was performed. No signs of melting was observed except a discoloration from white to slightly yellowish, beige was visible.

A small amount of the test substance was heated in porcelain crucible in a muffle furnace in an increasing of 100 °C stepwise procedure. Discoloration was visible at 400°C. At 500 °C the test substance was black-grey and stays solid (charred with smoke).

After that a DSC measurement was performed, an increasing of baseline with increasing endothermic peak was detected. The beginning of baseline and the peak maximum were evaluated with event marker function. Beginning of decomposition was at 287.1 °C and the peak maximum at 408.6 °C.

Conclusions:
The determination of the melting and boiling point of Barbital Sodium is technically not feasible as the test substance decomposes before melting and boiling >= 287.1 °C, respectively.
