One experimental study according to OECD 301C confirmed that 2,2'-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy)]bisethyl diacetate (CAS 111-21-7) is readily biodegradable according to the OECD criteria (60% biodegradation after 28 d). The degradation via abiotic hydrolysis is not considered to be a relevant degradation pathway in the environment since QSAR estimation results in a DT50 > 24 hours at pH 7.

Considering the high water solubility (> 1000 g/L) and the low potential for adsorption to organic soil and sediment particles (estimated log Koc: 1), the main compartment for environmental distribution is expected to be the water body. Nevertheless, persistence in this compartment is not expected since the substance is readily biodegradable.

Evaporation into air and the transport through the atmospheric compartment is not expected based on the low vapour pressure of 0.0394 Pa (SPARC v4.5). However, if released into air, 2,2'-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy)]bisethyl diacetate is susceptible to rapid indirect photodegradation by OH-radicals with a DT50 of 12.11 hours (AOPWIN v1.92).

The potential for bioaccumulation of the test substance is assumed to be low based on the log Kow of 0.03.
