Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

 m-Cresol is biodegraded in aquifer sediment under anaerobic conditions and by anoxic river sediment within 3 -4 weeks.

Although the substance is readily biodegradable and no biodegradation simulation test has to be performed for sediments, there are studies available on biodegradation in sediments.

Biodegradation test in aquifer sediment under anaerobic conditions were carried out using m-cresol as test substance. The lag time for the substance is 43 days under sulfate-reducing and 46-90 days under methanogenic conditions, indicating that m-cresol is biodegradable in sediment under anaerobic conditions.

Comparative experiments were conducted to examine undefined methanogenic consortia from Saale river sediment for their potential to degrade different aromatic compounds, i.a. m-cresol.. Anoxic river sediment degraded m-cresol within 3 -4 weeks. The methane production was 96 % of the theoretically possible yield of m-cresol. The results of both indicate, that m-cresol is amaerobically biodegradable.
