Description of key information

Acute oral toxicity according to a guideline similar OECD 401: LD50: 578 mg/kg bw

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Acute toxicity: via oral route

Endpoint conclusion
Dose descriptor:
LD50
Value:
578 mg/kg bw

Additional information

Testing for acute oral toxicity according to a guideline similar OECD 401 revealed an LD50 value of 578 mg/kg bw. Although based on the chemical structure MetHb forming properties are not unlikely, no definite signs for a relevant MetHb formation or MetHb caused lethality were observed in this study. Thus the oral LD50 value of 578 mg/kg bw. is adequate for direct comparison with classification criteria.

On the other hand human experience shows that methaemoglobinaemia might occure after accidental exposure.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data Met-Hb formation in humans is suspected after exposure. Since systemic availability for all three exposure routs is not unlikely a precautionary classification as R20/21/22 or Cat 4, H302/H312/H332 irrespective of the routs tested is warranted.
