Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not applicable
Conclusions:
The authors tested the toxicity of benzyl chloride to two fish species (i.e. Brachydanio rerio and Leuciscus idus) according to the OECD guideline 203 as published in 1981. Under the test conditions, the LC50 after 96h for Brachydanio rerio was estimated at 4 mg/L and LC50 after 48h for Leuciscus idus was at 16 mg/L. Considering the LC50-value for Brachydanio rerio, benzylchloride should not be classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment according to the CLP regulation EC n° 1272-2008. Classification of benzylchloride based on the LC50-value of Leuciscus idus is not possible, since the CLP regulation EC n° 1272-2008 requires the LC50 after 96h.
Executive summary:

The authors tested the toxicity of benzyl chloride (CAS n° 100-44-7) to two fish species (i.e. Brachydanio rerio and Leuciscus idus) according to the OECD guideline 203 as published in 1981. The duration of this static test was 96h for Brachydanio rerio and 48h for Leuciscus idus. No further data are reported on the test conditions.

Under the test conditions, the LC50 -values for Brachydanio rerio and Leuciscus idus were estimated at 4 mg/L and 16 mg/L respectively. Hence the LC50-value after 96h for Brachydanio rerio indicates that benzylchloride should not be classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment according to the CLP regulation EC n° 1272-2008. Classification of benzylchloride based on the LC50-value of Leuciscus idus however is not possible, since the CLP regulation EC n° 1272-2008 requires the LC50 after 96h.

No GLP standards are specified and very few details are given concerning the materials and methods. However, since this study was conducted according to the OECD guideline 203, this study should be considered as reliable with restrictions, a Klimisch 2.a, a guideline study without detailled documentation.
