Description of key information

Potential neuropathological effects observed in a drinking water study (Abou-Donia et al. 2000) are of unknown relevance. Changes could not be confirmed as treatment related.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The OECD SIAR also reported potential neurotoxicity with EMA citing the study of (Abou-Donia et al, 2000) but noted that a peer-review of the nervous system tissues collected in this study concluded that the reported effects were most consistent with foci of myelin artifacts. They also observed no treatment-related lesions in the sections of peripheral nerve and brain (Garman, 2002).

This is consistent with the EU ESR assessment of the available information on neurotoxic effects of MMA which were considered not important for the assessment of health effects of this chemical.

The gait alterations observed at 0.5% EMA in drinking water reported by Abou-Donia et al., are of unknown relevance as the histopathological changes in the peripheral nerve and brain could not be confirmed as being treatment-related.
