PNECs were derived for freshwater, saltwater, sediment, soil and micro-organisms using the HC5 model plus statistical extrapolation or equilibrium partitioning calculations.

Conclusion on classification

The available data for 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene indicate the acute aquatic toxicity ranges from 2.356 mg/L (96hr EC50 for Algae - QSAR) to 7.72 mg/L (96hr LC50 for fish - measured) and the log Kow is 3.63 (i.e. < 4.0). The substance does not meet the criteria for ready biodegradability but degrades rapidly and is therefore considered not to be persistent in the environment.

Under the harmonization of Annex 1 of Directive 67/548/EEC, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene has been classified as N R51-53 which has been transferred to a classification of Aquatic Chronic 2 hazard to the environment and the hazard statement 'Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects' under the GHS.
