No reliable guideline study has been identified for biodegradability, therefore a weight of evidence assessment has been used to determine the biodegradability of 1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene. Based on the assessment of four studies, Hutchins (1992), Marion and Melaney (1963), Leahy (2003) and CITI (1977), as well as QSAR predictions (Biowin and BioHCwin) and read across from m-xylene, o-xylene and p-xylene, structural analogues, the substance is considered to be biodegradable and would not be persistent in the environment.

1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene is expected to have low potential for bioaccumulation based on an experimental log Kow of 3.63. The estimated Koc value of 1097 indicates that the substance is expected to have low adsorption to suspended solids and sediment in water. Structural analysis of the 1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene molecule indicated that it is not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment due to the lack of hydrolyzable functional groups.
