Additional information

Due to the ready biodegradability and the low log Koc of caffeine (log Koc = 1.0) a considerable exposure of the soil is unlikely. Therefore, studies on toxicity to birds are not provided. However, a study investigating the acute toxicity of caffeine to Colinus virginianus is available and is presented to ensure completeness.

The acute toxicity of caffeine to bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) was assessed in a 24-hour oral toxicity study. The following doses were applied once by orally, each to 3 males and 3 females: 0, 500, 2500 and 5000 ppm. Birds were weighed before and 5 days after exposure. After 24 h exposure the birds were observed regarding feeding behaviour and toxic effects. No changes in food consumption and body weight of the tested birds were observed. Furthermore no signs of toxicity related to caffeine were observed.
