Description of key information

Within 28 days estrone was degraded to 37 %. and the reference compound to 77 % . At the end of the study period (day 44), 64 % degradation was reached for estrone.

Additional information

The biodegradation of estrone was studied in a ready biodegradability test according to OECD 301B (CO2 evolution test). Estrone was introduced at a concentration of 10 mg/L as carbon. Additionally, a reference substance was incubated at the same concentration and a toxicity control containing both compounds. The degradation was studied over a prolonged period of 44 days, because a plateau was not reached at day 28. Estrone was degraded to 0 % after 10 days when the degradation started. At day 28, 37 % degradation was reached. At the end of the study period (day 44), 64 % degradation was reached. Estrone is not readilybiodegradable, but degrades to a large extent over a prolonged period in this screening assay. Therefore, it is likely that estrone is inherently biodegradable. The reference compound was degraded to 58 % after 10 and to 77 % after 28 days.
