Plastics are used as a common substrate for numerous interior and exterior applications in the automotive industry due to several beneficial properties. PoPAA (plating on plastics for automotive applications) is the electrochemical treatment of plastic surfaces to deposit metallic chromium to achieve an improvement in the surface appearance, level of corrosion protection and to enhance durability. The PoPAA process is complex and typically involves a number of steps. In the first process step, the surface of the substrate is chemically pre-treated using chromium trioxide. A functional metal multi-layer system is then applied by electroplating. The final layer is a metallic chrome coating deposited by chromium trioxide-based electroplating. After the plating steps, adequate post-treatment steps are carried out, such as rinsing, reduction and drying.

The use of chromium trioxide is critical for two different process steps: the etching pre-treatment step; and the chrome electroplating process. PoPAA is a serial wet-in-wet process that is carried out on fully automated systems (the only form of application is dipping or immersion of parts through a series of tanks containing solutions in open systems). The process is fully industrialized involving recirculation of treatment solutions in a closed loop and high throughput of parts. Only the combination of adequate pre-treatment, main process step and post-treatment will lead to a surface providing all necessary key requirements for the respective applications in the automotive sector.

With PoPAA selective plating of multi-component parts is feasible, where the coating can be applied exclusively and precisely on conductive surfaces, while non-conductive surfaces will not be plated.

The resulting coating is free from hexavalent chromium and is characterised by its corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, sunlight resistance, sufficient adhesion and stone chip resistance, high wear and scratch resistance.
