Several reliable (Klimisch 1 or 2) toxicity studies in fish, invertebrates, and algae have been conducted for HQEE and are included in this dossier.  These Key studies are summarized below.  There were no reliable long-term toxicity data for fish and invertebrates or aquatic plants.  However, a waiver is being applied for these endpoints. There are no reliable data for microorganisms however a waiver is being applied.

 

Adequate reliable measured data exists for short-term toxicity to fish for HQEE and has been documented within this dossier. The most reliable study result for the test substance has been identified as a study Lawrence and Hirsch (1995) which reports an LC50 for short term toxicity in fish of >1044 mg/L. Consequently this value will be taken as the short-term toxicity in fish endpoint for HQEE.

 

There are no reliable (Klimisch 1 or 2) long-term toxicity studies with fish available with HQEE. However, a waiver is applied for this endpoint on the basis of negligible exposure to aquatic organisms and no adverse effects to fish are expected.

 

A reliable (Klimisch 1) short-term toxicity study with invertebrates has been conducted for HQEE and is included in this dossier. The key study, Lawrence and Hirsch (1995), provides a 48-hr LC50 of >100.2 mg/L for Daphnia magna. Consequently this value will be taken as the short-term toxicity in aquatic invertebrate’s endpoint for HQEE.

 

There are no reliable (Klimisch 1 or 2) long-term toxicity studies with invertebrates available with HQEE. However, a waiver is applied for this endpoint on the basis of negligible exposure and no short-term aquatic toxicity.

 

Adequate reliable measured data exists for toxicity of HQEE to algae. The data point of highest concern for this endpoint has been identified in a reliable study which reports a measured 72 hr EC50 of >970 mg/L and 72 hr NOEC of 500 mg/L, based on growth, for toxicity to aquatic algae. Consequently these values will be taken as the toxicity in aquatic algae endpoint for HQEE.

 

There are no reliable toxicity data for microoganisms with HQEE.There is negligible exposure to aqueous process streams during downstream use and hence also negligible emission to a sewage treatment plant. Therefore, microbial exposure is negligible. Additionally, studies on toxicity to aquatic organisms indicate that microbial toxicity is unlikely to occur. Both long and short-term toxicity to the most sensitive aquatic organism tested was >100 mg/L. Therefore, based on negligible emission to a sewage treatment plant and the factors indicating microbial toxicity is unlikely to occur, the endpoint is waived and no testing is proposed.
