Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

For the registration substance no monitoring data are available. But for the structurally similar substance SAS (Secondary Alkane Sulfonate, CAS No. 97489-15-1, already REACH registered) such data are available (see Table). SAS has, as the registration substance, a sulfonate group and an alkyl chain between 12 and 15 carbon atoms. Both substances are readily biodegradable. Based on this facts a read-across to the SAS result is justified.

MONITORING DATA FROM VARIOUS SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS (STP)

In the SAS HERA Report (AISE, 2005) monitoring data for SAS in municipal STPs were given which are listed in Table 4.zzz below.

FATE OF SAS IN SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS

Field et al. (1995) have carried out a detailed mass balance investigation on the fate of SAS in the municipal sewage treatment plant of Zurich-Glatt (Figure see AISE HERA SAS, 2005).

15.6% of SAS entering the STP is transfered via primary sludge to anaerobic digester and 84.4% of SAS enters the activated sludge plant. In the activated sludge 84.1% is of SAS is biodegraded and 0.3% of SAS is in the effluent of the STP. This mass balance is used for the environmental exposure assessment of SAS.

MONITORING DATA OF SAS IN GERMAN RIVERS

SAS monitoring data from six German rivers measured at 13 different locations are available (AISE HERA SAS, 2005). At 11 locations the measured SAS concentration was <= 1 µg/L which was the limit of detection. At 2 locations higher SAS concentrations were found but the reliability of these measurements cannot be assigned from the available data (see Table 4.bbb).
