The aerobic degradation of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyltrimethylenediamine (TMPDA) has been assessed according to OECD 310 guideline during 60 days (BASF, 2013). The degree of biodegradation of the test substance at the end of exposure was 23%. Another degradation test performed according to OECD 301A guideline showed that less than 10 % of the substance is degraded after 28 days (Arkema, 1995). Thus, the substance is considered as not readily biodegradable.

Two other tests have been performed according to OECD 302B guideline. 99% of degradation (DOC removal) was observed after 20 -21 days (BASF, 1985 and 1987). These both studies have been disregarded since activated sludge taken from a BASF waste water treatment plant treating industrial sewage were used. But it can be concluded that TMPDA is not persistent since the substance is completely degraded with adapted inoculum. Therefore, there is no need to investigate further the degradation of the substance in accordance with column 2 of Annex IX chapter 9.2 of Regulation EC 1907/2006. In addition, the sediment and soil are not expected to be the compartments of concern as the substance is very soluble and has a very low log Kow.
