Description of key information

No potential for hydrolysis due to missing functional groups.

Tar acids, Xylenol fraction (CAS 84989-06-0) is considered as inherently biodegradable based on all available information (weight-of-evidence). Further, the substance has a low potential for accumulation in soil and sediment.

Low potential for bioaccumulation based on log Kow ≤ 3.

Low potential for adsorption due to low octanol water partition coefficient the parameter to which the adsorption potential of this substance is related to.

Additional information

With regard to the chemical structure having no hydrolyzable functional group, constituents of Tar acids, xylenol fraction, i.e. xylenols, cresols, ethyl phenols, ethyl cresols, tri-/tetra-methyl phenols, are not expected to hydrolyse under environmental conditions.

Although there is evidence that constituents like cresols, ethylphenols or some xylenols are readily biodegradable Tar acids, Xylenol fraction (CAS 84989-06-0) is considered as inherently biodegradable since rapid degradation cannot be shown for all constituents of the UVCB. Results on the biodegradation in sediment provide evidence that these constituents will be ultimately degraded under aerobic conditions with half-lives between 9.4 and 43 h for p-cresol in water and between 5.9 and 11 h in water/sediment systems. In so-called eco-cores, p-cresol degraded with half-lives between 3.0 and 16 h. In simulation studies with soil o-cresol degraded with half-live times of 1.6 d for sandy loam and 5.1 d for sandy silt loam. m-cresol degraded with half-live times of 0.6 d for sandy loam and 11.3 d for sandy silt loam. Therefore, the substance has a low potential for accumulation in soil and sediment.

 

Available data for all main components of Tar acids, xylenol fraction (CAS 84989-06-0) demonstrate the log Kow to be below 3. Thus, Tar acids, xylenol fraction (CAS 84989-06-0) exhibits a low potential for bioaccumulation and in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Column 2 of Annex IX, section 9.3.2, a study on the bioaccumulation in aquatic species does not need to be conducted.

 

In accordance with column 2 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex VIII, 9.3.1, the study does not need to be conducted because the substance has a low octanol water partition coefficient and the adsorption potential of this substance is related to this parameter. Available data for all main components of Tar acids, xylenol fraction (CAS 84989-06-0) demonstrate the log Kow to be below 3. Thus, Tar acids, xylenol fraction (CAS 84989-06-0) exhibits low potential for adsorption.
