Additional information

A study with bismuth (III) trinitrate pentahydrate was conducted in accordance with the method of the Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part 34.4.1 (Test O.1) to determine the oxidising properties of this substance. The results show that the mean burning time of the 4:1 bismuth (III) trinitrate pentahydrate-to-cellulose ratio (55 seconds), was less than the mean burning time of a 2:3 mixture of potassium bromate (reference substance) and cellulose (63 seconds). In addition the mean burning times of the 4:1 test item-to-cellulose ratio (55 seconds) and 1:1 test item-to-cellulose ratio (85 seconds), were less than the mean burning time of a 3:7 mixture of potassium bromate (reference substance) and cellulose (122 seconds).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on experimental results bismuth (III) trinitrate pentahydrate is classified to be a oxidising solid of the category 2 in accordance with the regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
