Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Stability

Upon contact with water lithium bis(oxalato)borate hydrolyses spontaneously. The detected degradation product boric acid was identified with 11B-NMR. The half live of LiBOB was 169 min at 25 °c and decreased with increasing temperature.

Biodegradation

The screening test on biodegradation in water (closed bottle test) revealed a ready biodegradation for lithium bis(oxalato)borate. At least 60 % degradation was reached within the 10 days immediately following the attainment of 10 % biodegradation (10-day window). Except for a deviating difference of duplicate values of the reference substance at the end of the test (24 %), which was considered not to have affected the integrity of this study, all criteria for acceptability of the test were met. Therefore, this study was considered to be valid.

Transport and distribution

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, section 9.3.1, a study on adsorption and desorption does not need to be conducted, as the physico-chemical properties of the test substance indicate a low adsorption potential. LiBOB has a log Pow of -4.8. Nevertheless a study has been conducted with lithium bis(oxalato)borate, which resulted in a log Koc of 1.25 (at 26 °C), showing that the test substance is not likely to absorb particles and soil.
