There are data available for the short-term and long-term toxicity of benoxacor to fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae. The toxicity of benoxacor to microorganisms from activated sludge has also been investigated in a 3h respiration inhibition study.

The lowest short-term toxicity LC50 value for fish was determined to be 1.4 mg/L for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The long-term NOEC for fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) was determined to be 0.31 mg/L in a fish early life stage study. The lowest short-term toxicity indicator (48 hour EC50 value) for aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) was calculated to be 4.782 mg/L. The NOEC value for aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) was determined to be 0.354 mg/L in a 21-day study using flow-through conditions. The effects of benoxacor on algal growth have been investigated for four algal species, with an ErC50 = 13.5 mg/L and the most sensitive EC10 being 0.22 mg/L over 72 hours in a test with green algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus).

The key value used in the chemical safety assessment is the lowest available long-term toxicity NOEC value, i.e. the EC10 of 0.22 mg/L found in the algal toxicity test. The 3h NOEC for benoxacor to microorganisms from activated sludge was 100 mg/L.
