A condenser was used to collect any distillate from the substance, with a thermometer measuring the temperature of the test substance, and a second thermometer to monitor the condensate temperature. The sample was heated through a range of 150 ºC to 270 ºC, with the temperature of the condensate monitored throughout.

The sample was not observed to boil during the test. At approximately 160 ºC, the sample was observed to ‘smoke’ with no evidence of distillation, and no temperature rise at the condenser. The sample was noted to be darker in colour. Heat was continually applied until the sample reached 270 ºC. The sample was not observed to boil, and there was no evidence of distillation. GC analysis of the sample after heating showed evidence of degradation.
