Description of key information

Benzoic acid occurs naturally in foods, and benzyl derivatives are approved food additives with an ADI of 0-5 mg/kg bw/d.

Additional information

Benzoic acid occurs naturally in plants and many foods, including fruits (berries), vegetables, meats, cheeses and milk products, and wine. JECFA, EFSA and the U.S. FDA have approved benzyl derivatives as food additives and flavourings with an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0 -5 mg/kg bw/d (combined). Cases of urticaria, asthma, rhinitis, or anaphylactic shock have been reported following oral, dermal, or inhalation exposure to benzoic acid and sodium benzoate. In the general human population, adverse health reactions to benzoic acid and sodium benzoate are rare. Sodium benzoate has been used therapeutically in patients with urea cycle abnormalities, at a dose range of 250-500 mg/kg bw/d, without significant adverse effects.
