Long term daphnia and sediment tests are available for 8 different cationic surfactants. The results of these studies were compared to the via EPM calculated effects as justification of the use of the EPM for cationic surfactants. For 5 out of the 8 the EPM predicted the EC10 for sediment organisms more conservatively than what was observed in the sediment test without applying the additional safety factor of 10 to compensate for ingestion. After including the additional AF (of 10), for all 8 substances the EPM was found to be more conservative than the observed sediment toxicity. The Kp sups-water for these substances ranged from 1040 L/kg to 20100 L/kg.
New data sediment and daphnia data on cationic surfactants are frequently generated and will be added to the dataset in the end to generate sufficient support using the appropriate ECHA guideline to report the respective information..

Aquatic PNEC is used to calculate the benthic PNEC using a Kpsusp-sed of 3526 L/kg.

Description of key information

No benthic test data is available for N-C16-18-alkyl-(even numbered, C18 unsaturated) trimethylpropane-1,3 -diamine. The PNEC for benthic organisms is therefore calculated applying the equilibrium partitioning method using a Kpsusp-sed (or Kdsusp-sed) of 3526 L/kg

The EPM based benthic PNEC (without the correction for additional uptake via food) of 1.07 mg/kg dw

Distribution constants for for N-C16-18-alkyl-(even numbered, C18 unsaturated) trimethylpropane-1,3 -diamine as used in the calculation of the PNECsed.

Since PNECfreshwater is based on the bulk concentration, a recalculation was necessary to PNECfreshwaterdissolved before application of the equilibrium partitioning method. The following equation was used:

PNECfreshwaterdissolved= PNECfreshwaterbulk/ (1 + Kpsusp-sed * SUSPwater*10-6)

Where:

PNECfreshwaterbulk= 0.32 µg/L

Kpsusp-sed = 3526 L/kg

SUSPwater= 15 mg/L.

The resulting PNECfreshwaterdissolved= 0.304 µg/L.

The PNECsed is then calculated using the equations detailed in REACH guidance R.16:

                         PNECsed                         =   Ksusp-sed-water* PNECaquatic dissolved* 1000 * 1 / RHOsed

Where:         PNECaquatic-dissolved            =      0.304 µg/L

                         Ksusp-sed-water                =   882 m3/m3

                         RHOsed                          =   1150 kg/m3

                         PNECsed-EPM                 = 0.233 mg/kg ww

                                                               = 1.07 mg/kg dw

It should be noted that real measured sorption data are used which are not normalized to the organic matter content of the soils and that for both sediment and soil the same Kd is used. For suspended matter however the Kd is doubled to compensate for the additional sorption due to a higher content of small particles.
