Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

TSP: 72h NOEC = 5.15 µg/L and 72h EC50 > 5.15 µg/L for growth rate (no statistically and biologically significant effect at saturated concentration).
DSP: 72h NOEC = 140 µg/L and 72h EC50 = 326 µg/L for growth rate.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No study are available on the reaction mass of 2,4,6 -tris(1 -phenylethyl)phenol and Bis(1 -phenylethyl)phenol for this endpoint.

However, two reliable studies are available for its two main components (i.e. Tristyrenated phenol and Distyrenated phenol). Therefore, they were selected as key studies. In both studies the toxicity to Desmodesmus subspicatus has been determined in a 72 hour static test according to the OECD Guideline No. 201 (2006) and GLP.

In the test with TSP, based on a preliminary range finding test, a limit test with a saturated solution was carried out. Due to very low solubility of the test substance, the saturated test solution has been prepared using a column elution system as generator system. The saturated solution obtained had a concentration of 10.3 µg/L. The decrease of the test item during the end of the study cannot be explained by adsorption onto algae since the same decrease is observed in the vessels without algae. The geometric mean measured test item concentration was 5.15µg/L.

No statistically and biologically significant effect has been observed in the growth rate of the cells during the test. A mean of 16.6% of inhibition of yield has been observed at the saturated concentration.

The following results were obtained:

- 72h NOEC =5.15µg/L based on growth rate

- 72h EC50 >5.15µg/L based on growth rate

- 72h NOEC <5.15µg/L based on biomass .

- 72h EC50 > 5.15 µg/L based on biomass

The OECD TG 201 validity criteria were fulfilled. Therefore, the test item (TSP) is considered as not hazardous to the aquatic organisms at saturated concentration.

In the test with DSP, due to very low solubility of the test substance, a saturated test solution has been prepared using a column elution system as generator system. The saturated solution obtained had a concentration of 685µg/L. This saturated solution and further four dilution levels were tested in a geometrical series with a dilution factor of 2, nominal:6.25- 12.5 - 25.0 - 50.0 - 100 % of the saturated solution. Analytical measurement of the tested concentrations has been performed at the start of the test and at the end of he test in the presence and absence of algae . The following geometric mean measured concentrations were used for the determination of the effect concentrations: 22.9 – 76.4 – 140 – 309 – 688 µg/L.

The following results were obtained:

- 72h NOEC = 140 µg/L based on growth rate and biomass

- 72h EC50 = 326 µg/L based on growth rate (95% CI : 297 - 379 µg/L)

- 72h EC50 = 210 µg/L based on biomass (95% CI : 177 - 251 µg/L)

The OECD TG 201 validity criteria were fulfilled. Therefore, the test item (DSP) is considered as very toxic to the aquatic organisms tested.
