Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance, silane:

•       Is extremely flammable

•       The flammability in contact with water is not relevant because the substance is a pyrophoric gas

•       Is pyrophoric

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
pyrophoric

Additional information

A reliable handbook indicates that the substance ignites spontaneously in contact with air. A secondary source to which reliability could not be assigned supports this conclusion.

On this basis, the requirement to test for the flammability range of a gas is waived.

A secondary source to which reliability could not be assigned gives the flammability range in air of the substance as 1.4 -96%.

Hydrides may be flammable in contact with water (REACH Guidance R7a); however, testing for this property is not considered necessary because the substance is known to be flammable in contact with air.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is classified as follows:

Classification and Labelling according to Regulation 1272/2008: Flam. Gas 1; H220 Extremely flammable gas.
